The first settlement in the history of Antalya is Old Town (Kale içi). The streets, houses and structures of Old Town (Kale içi) bring the traces of Antalya history to our day. Importance of the old houses, streets not only in terms of architecture, but also in the way people live, behaviour, traditions and social aspects of the information is very useful. Old Town streets mostly extend up from the harbour towards the outer walls. Antalya Old Town (Kale içi) streets are very narrow and there is no way to pass cars from some streets. There are a lot of streets in the Old town, but it is almost impossible to get lost, because whichever way you go, you find yourself at nearby a historical point.
The ancient city of Old Town one of the sea and one of the land, was protected by two walls resembling Horseshoe. There were also walls separating urban settlements. The outer walls consisted of numerous towers, each of which them was fifty feet away. The history of the walls of Old Town dates back to ancient times. On the foundations of the Hellenistic period, it was built by the Romans and extended or repaired during the Seljuk. Stone blocks with many ancient features were used on the walls. Until the end of the 19th century, almost all of them were preserved. Today, remains from Old Town; Hadrian Gate, Clock tower, Hidirlik Tower and other historical artefacts can be seen. The structure of the Old town is protected by law. It is not possible to build new buildings in any way. Old Town (Kaleici) is now fully used for tourism purposes. At present, there are plenty of boutique hotels where you can enjoy the city at reasonable rates, and you will feel that Antalya is a wonderful ancient city. Today, Kaleici has become a unique beauty tourism centre with entertainment places, pensions, restaurants, souvenir shops and antique carpet stores.
You can sit at the bars in Old Town (Kaleici) and enjoy your holiday while you sip your cold beer. As I mentioned before, Old Town (Kaleici) is located in the very heart of the city. The historical places you can visit with a few minutes walk are Hidirlik tower, Karaalioglu Park, Atatürk’s House, Fluted Minaret, Broken Minaret, Clock Tower, Old Harbour and Hadrian’s Gate. There is also a Toy Museum in the marina of Old Town(Kaleiçi). Those who have come on holiday with their children can also see this museum.
