With Xanthos army of 4-5 thousand soldier, tried to resist the Persian army consisting of few hundreds of thousands of soldiers. When the xanthosians knew they were going to be defeated, they killed women and children, and then burned the whole city and committed suicide. After the withdrawal of the Persian army, 80 xanthosians (war time they were living in other regions) were returned to their homeland and re-established the city with the refugees. As a result of good relations with Athens, they returned to their old glorious days. Xanthos, who once again gained independence in 167 BC, was the capital of the Lycian Union during this period. However, their independence ended in 42 BC with the occupation of the Romans. The Roman soldiers under Brutus have destroyed the city.
